Before deactivating, ensure you no longer require a U.S. DOT Number. You are required to maintain an active DOT Number if:
Your vehicles have a gross weight rating of 10,000 lbs or more (including vehicle and trailer combined)
Your vehicles transport 8 or more people (including the driver) for compensation
Your vehicles transport 16 or more people (including the driver) not for compensation
You transport hazardous materials (HazMat) in quantities requiring placarding
